Birth Control Shots
Unlike birth control pills which are taken daily, birth control shot is administered once every 3 months by a health care provider to prevent pregnancy. Similar with the pills, the shot prevents ovulation from happening by thickening the cervical mucus and thining the uterine lining. It contains progestin which is a good option for women who cannot take estrogen.
Injectable birth control may be prescribed by the provider you see in one of the following ways. The provider may change the standard route of injection, which if given by a health care provider is intramuscular (into the muscle), to a route called subcutaneous or under the skin similar to how diabetic medications are given. You must be willing to give yourself an injection in this case. The other option would be if you live in a state that allows pharmacist administration of the injection, your provider can order the medication at your pharmacy to be given there. NOTE: It is your responsibility to contact your Pharmacy to see if this is allowed in your state and the pharmacist is willing to administer.

Birth Control Rings
Birth control ring is the most low maintenance form of birth control. It is a small ring that is inserted into the vagina and sends a steady, low dose of hormones into your system preventing pregnancy. This is worn for 3 weeks then replaced with a new one after your 1 week break during monthly period.
Though vaginal rings are effective and provides each of use, this may cause headache, weight gain, nausea and vaginal irriation. Aside from these, you are not advised to use vaginal rings if you have a history of blood clots, heart attack and strokes, or if you have breast cancer or other hormone-sensitive cancer.

Birth Control Patch
Similar with the other birth control types, the birth control patch releases hormones that prevents you from getting pregnant by preventing ovulation. The patch can be worn on your arm, belly, or other places in your body and the hormones is delivered to your bloodstream through your skin. It is replaced with new ones every 7 days and same day every week. After 3 weeks, you will take 1 week break during your period.
Using birth control patch helps in having lighter periods, less blood and cramping. However, this may also cause headaches, tender breasts, nausea and vomiting, rash or redness in the patch area.
