Three Secret Rules to Prevent You From Catching the Flu

Did you know that if you do the following three things, your chances of getting the flu (or other respiratory viruses) goes way down.

1

Don't ever put your fingers in your eyes.

2

Don't ever put your fingers in your nose. If you've got to pick your nose, wash your hands and use a clean tissue. No fingers!

3

Don't inhale the breath, cough or sneeze of someone who is sick.

These are the three most common ways that people get sick from respiratory viruses. If you can obey these flu rules, you can avoid getting sick in most cases! Yay!

Frequently Asked Questions

Flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by the influenza viruses. It infects the nose, throat, and sometimes the lungs. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death when left untreated.

People who have flu often feel some or all of these symptoms:

  • cough
  • sore throat
  • runny or stuffy nose
  • muscle or body aches
  • headaches
  • fatigue (tiredness)
  • feeling feverish/chills
  • some people may or may not have fever
  • some people may experience vomiting and diarrhea, which is more common in children than adults.

Yes, flu is contagious. Flu viruses spread from tiny droplets made when people with the flu cough, sneeze or talk. If you have flu, you may be able to spread it to someone else before you know you are sick, as well as while you are sick.

  • People with flu are most contagious in the first 3-4 days after their illness begins.
  • Some adults may be able to infect others beginning 1 day before symptoms develop and up to 5 to 7 days after becoming sick.
  • Young children and people with weakened immune systems, might be able to infect others for an even longer time.

It takes about 2 days from the time a person is exposed and infected with flu before showing any symptoms. But sometimes it can range from about 1 to 4 days.

If left untreated, flu can lead to bacterial pneumonia, ear infections, sinus infections and worsening of chronic medical conditions, such as congestive heart failure, asthma, or diabetes.

Even healthy people can get flu and can happen at any age. Some people are at high risk of developing serious flu-related complications if they get sick. This includes children younger than 5 years, pregnant women, people who are 65 years and older, and people of any age with certain chronic medical conditions (such as asthma, diabetes, or heart disease).

The most important step in preventing flu is to get a flu vaccine each year. It is shown to reduce flu related illnesses and the risk of serious flu complications that can result in hospitalization or even death. To help slow the spread of germs that cause respiratory (nose, throat, and lungs) illnesses, like flu, CDC recommends everyday preventive actions (like staying away from people who are sick, covering coughs and sneezes, and frequent handwashing).

There are many reasons to get an influenza (flu) vaccine each year. Benefits includes the following:

  • Influenza (flu) vaccination can keep you from getting sick with flu and it helps prevents millions of illnesses and flu-related doctor’s visits each year.
  • Getting vaccinated reduce severity of illness in people who get vaccinated but still get sick.
  • For people with certain chronic health conditions, getting vaccinated is an important preventive tool and help reduce the risk of a flu-related worsening of chronic lung disease.
  • Pregnant women who gets vaccinated helps protect themselves and their infants from getting influenza (flu) in their first few months of life.
  • Flu vaccination reduced risk of severe life-threatening influenza to children.
  • Getting vaccinated each year protects people around you which includes people who are vulnerable to serious flu illness, like babies, young children, older people, and people with certain chronic health conditions.
