Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) Image

Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)

A Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a bacterial infection that most commonly occurs in the lower urinary tract (the bladder and the urethra) but can develop in any part of your urinary system – your bladder, kidneys, ureters, or urethra. When limited to the lower urinary tract, they can be painful and annoying yet relatively harmless. However, a UTI can spread to the kidneys and cause serious problems when left untreated. While UTIs can develop in both men and women, they are much more common amongst women due to the structure of the female anatomy. If you’re experiencing a urinary tract infection, your doctor will typically treat it with antibiotics. However, you can take steps to reduce the likelihood of contracting a UTI in the first place.

If you believe you have a urinary tract infection, schedule an appointment with a general practitioner or urologist using AZOVA™ today. Your doctor will address your concerns and suggest the best treatment method to get you feeling better as soon as possible. Talk to a doctor to see what UTI treatments are available for you today.

UTI Causes and Symptoms

Urinary tract infections occur when bacteria enter the body through the urethra and multiply in the bladder. The bacteria will begin to spread throughout the urinary system from the bladder until treated with antibiotics. This bacteria usually originates in the gastrointestinal tract, with E. coli being the most common causal micro-organism. The bacteria can spread on their own, through sexual intercourse, or can develop as a secondary effect of sexually transmitted infections.

Depending on the area of the urinary system that’s most affected, there is a range of symptoms that may present themselves. These are the symptoms based on each part of the urinary system:

Bladder (cystitis):
  • Lower abdominal discomfort
  • Frequent, painful urination
  • Pelvic pressure
  • Blood in urine
Kidneys (acute pyelonephritis):
  • High fever
  • Shakes and chills
  • Back or side pain
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
Urethra (urethritis):
  • Discharge
  • Burning with urination
Virtual UTI Diagnosis and Treatment Image

Virtual UTI Diagnosis and Treatment

Since infections need to be treated as quickly as possible, waiting for a doctor’s appointment can be worrisome. Virtual UTI treatment will save you the hassle of waiting, visiting a walk-in clinic, or the emergency room. During your virtual doctor’s consultation, your medical provider may begin by asking you questions such as the symptoms you’re experiencing, the number of UTIs you’ve previously experienced, what you believe could have triggered the infection, if you’ve had urine samples taken in the past and their results, and whether or not you’ve experienced other urinary difficulties.

With virtual treatment, there isn’t the luxury of immediate urine analysis. Still, an experienced general practitioner or urologist will have a strong idea of your condition based on their initial evaluation. If a sample is needed, they will help you organize an appointment at your local medical lab. However, misdiagnosis can occur, so it’s essential to communicate with your doctor if your initial treatment isn’t relieving your symptoms or you suspect the development of a yeast infection.

When treating a urinary tract infection, antibiotics are the primary method for eliminating the infection. Common medications include Macrobid, Bactrim, and Keflex. The medicine and length of treatment will depend on the type of bacteria and your health status.

Additionally, there are preventative practices you can follow to avoid future urinary tract infections, including drinking plenty of water, avoiding drinks such as coffee, alcohol, soda, and using a heating pad. Many women also drink cranberry juice which has potential benefits for preventing infections.
